In yet another great feat of science a U.S. patient has become the first woman cured of HIV. She’s the 3rd person cured of the virus that cures aids. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what stem cells can do. They are not always the cure but they are a gateway to endless possibilities. The cord blood that she has been in remission and free of the virus for 14 months.
The speed that stem cell research has grown over the last few years is marvelous. I truly believe they will be instrumental in many diseases at the very least brought under control if not eradicated. We need to really open up all avenues to terminal or very sick patients that want to take the risk. We need to give them every chance to fight for their lives and cut the red tape on treatments like this. Let the people decide instead of bureaucratic red tape. I know if I’m very sick or terminal I’d want to roll the dice and see if I could be saved. What’s the worse it could do kill me? Well if I’m already terminal I’ll take that risk. Science is just awesome.
We love science here at XUFN & will be highlighting encouraging news like this when we come upon it. We also have a number of long form stories in the works in the science realm. But shh those are a bit down the line. For now read the full story over at Reuters.
